How to Use the Paver Calculator
Planning a patio or walkway project? Accurate material estimation is crucial to avoid overspending or running out of materials mid-project. This Paver Calculator makes it easy to determine the exact number of bricks or stones required, along with the necessary base materials like gravel, bedding sand, and polymeric sand.
1. Measure Your Project Area
First, determine the total square footage of your space. The calculator supports both rectangular and circular shapes.
Rectangle Formula: Length × Width = Area (sq ft)
Circle Formula: π × (Diameter/2)² = Area (sq ft)
2. Select Paver Size & Dimensions
The calculator determines the area of a single paver in square feet. You can choose from standard sizes (like 4"x8" or 12"x12") or input custom dimensions.(Paver Length inches × Paver Width inches) / 144 = Paver Area (sq ft)
3. Review Total Materials Needed
We automatically divide your total project area by the area of a single paver to find the base count.Total Project Area / Single Paver Area = Total Pavers Needed
Pro Tip: Always add a "waste factor" to your order. We recommend 5-10% for simple rectangular patios and 15-20% for curved shapes or angled patterns like herringbone, which require more cutting.
Paver Base Material Requirements
A long-lasting installation requires a solid foundation. Our tool estimates these specific base layers:
- Gravel Base: Usually 4-6 inches for patios/walkways and 10-12 inches for driveways. This provides drainage and stability.
- Sand Bed: A 1-inch layer of bedding sand goes on top of the compacted gravel to level the pavers.
- Polymeric Sand: Special sand used to fill the joints between pavers. It hardens to lock pavers in place and prevent weeds.
- Edge Restraints: Rigid plastic or concrete edging installed around the perimeter to keep pavers from spreading over time.
The Paver Calculator automatically converts these volume requirements into tons (for gravel/sand) and bags (for polymeric sand) so you know exactly what to order.
